John 14:13

And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

Therefore we need to make sure that what we ask Jesus for is in HIS will, so that the Father will be glorified! Its not about what I want - but what the Son wants so that the Father is glorified.

Example: if I am meant to be a worship leader that travels around leading Gods people into more intimate worship of God, then it is pretty pointless me asking for a horse, so I can do show jumping! Its not where I am meant to be, therefore its outside of Gods will for me, and it is less likely to bring Glory to the Father! I need to be doing what I have been called to do, not whatever I want! Its a laid down life - Gods will not mine, so that through me, the Father will be glorified!

May Gods blessings shower down upon you. And may you be coated in the dust of your Rabbi!

So. What is His will? What is my calling? Does this mean I cannot pray for others because it may not be His will?? Does this mean to pray accurately for them I would need to know His will for them? It is written "pray continually with all kinds of prayer requests", praying constantly for "his will to be done" is not all kinds of requests, it is the same request!

Generally speaking, Gods will is that none perish - For God so loved the world... Its why Jesus came. More specifically for you - I have no idea! Your walk and relationship with God is between you and Him! In reality it has very little to do with me!
What I can tell you is how you find out His will for you. Many think its simply asking Him a few questions and being done with it, believing that they heard no shout from the roof tops "thou shalt ..." I've not seen God do that with anyone! What I have seen Him do is more personal and more intimate. He guides our paths. He organises things and people and opportunities. He gives us free will to stuff up and fall on our face, or get it right, hence learning - but we need to be open to these. What He does with me will be different to what He does with you, because we are two different people!
When you don't know how to pray - pray in tongues or in the Spirit. As you rightly point out, praying only for His will is only one kind of prayer. That is where we need to be sensitive enough to stop, shut up, and listen to the Holy Spirit. He is our guide! How do we not get lost in a new city, which speaks a different language to us, we follow and listen to our guide!
Your calling will be revealed to you by the Holy Spirit, if you ask and are willing to listen. Find others who will seek God for you as well, for confirmation. I know when I first started out, I seriously thought that I had an overactive imagination, but then what I was saying was being confirmed by others who have been listening to the Holy Spirit since before I was born! Its a relationship! It takes time, practice, wisdom, patience, discernment, and a lot of other things! You will eventually get the hang of it!
One thing to remember - there are three possible places where our thoughts can come from. 1.God - these are good and will lead to good things. 2. Us - sometimes we can join the "negative committee" that meets far to regularly in our heads. Our own thoughts can be good, but can also be bad - sift them with wisdom, keep the good, chuck the bad! 3. The devil - the serious negative committee - if thoughts could be smelled - these would reek of sulphur and brimstone! Kick them out and shut the door!
Praying for someone else? Needs wisdom and discernment! You really need the Holy Spirit here. Just because a friend wants a new car, doesn't mean God wants them to have a new car - He may have a bus in mind for them! Be careful when praying in agreement with someone! It is better to be cautious and rely on the Holy Spirit, than to throw caution to the wind and pray willy nilly!
When I started out praying, and I didn't know what to pray for someone - I simply prayed for Gods will. Now, I shut up and listen! God will speak, IF we give Him the opportunity and the room! Now, I pray what I feel God is telling me. And sometimes that is hard, because others don't want to hear that!
Again, when you get stuck - if you speak in tongues, then pray in tongues. I don't speak or pray in tongues, so I spend time quietly (or loudly) worshipping until I get an answer!
Ultimately, your relationship with God is your responsibility.
If it helps, write down what you think God is saying! It will line up with scripture! Get yourself an experienced prayer partner, someone you trust to pray with and for you, and make a safe place to practice and learn.
